FLYERS – drama

Pre-first draft; developing characters and plot structure

In the South of France, in the seaside village of Menton, there is a hand-painted message on the old, wrought-iron fence of a little house that reads, “No flyers. Merci.”

Farid immigrated to France from Algeria with his brother when he was two-years old. Now in his 40s, he lives with his brother and helps his brother run his
business that producers advertisements and flyers for local businesses in Menton.

Jamal,  a teenager and illegal immigrant from Senegal, lives on the streets and gets a job delivering flyers for the brothers. Farid believes Jamal is lazy, while Jamal thinks Farid, and his brick-and-mortar flyer business, is behind the times.

Farid’s brother dies unexpectedly and the business folds. Farid gives what little money he has to his brother’ widow and child, who sell the house they had shared and move back to Algeria.

With no money, no home, and no business, Farid finds himself in a similar situation to Jamal and the two become roommates. Jamal gets a job at a local grocery store to support them. But when immigration comes looking for Jamal, a deeper bond is formed and their unlikely friendship strengthens.
